(And I'm damn well banking on that sort of stuff my own self.)

Kjerstin, absolutely class and race come into play here. When I talked with Rosie Molinary she talked about how sometimes Latina women will wear makeup designed to be noticed as a sign of appreciation that the event (whatever it may be) was worth the effort. I'm glad that not all women photographed were white, but I think the study just used white and black women, which seems to be a shortcoming. (And I'll certainly remember the powdered-wig-and-arched-brow bit whenever I start to become entranced with evo-psych...)

Tori, that bit boggled my mind too. Makeup *can* be seen that way, but to state that as though it were fact seemed a woeful shortcoming of the study's presumptions.

Martha Joy, thank you so much for pointing me in her direction! I'm digging her work, and she's certainly a candidate for interviewing. *mwah*!

Courtney, thank you! Yeah, I'm way tired of reading that kind of beauty study--this was refreshing indeed.Autumn Whitefield-Madranohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03379314479257695986noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5689865906513225949.post-56582428347115512882011-10-13T10:34:48.762-04:002011-10-13T10:34:48.762-04:00Very interesting! I think I have to think this over a bit more, but I liked, "If we’re going to study beauty, we need to do more than just “discover” that pretty people have it a little bit easier." You share some ideas about evopsych, and the need to be wary about studies and the way they are interpreted. It could be very interesting for us readers, and the two of you too, I think. Also, potential for reaching other audiences :)

Please have a look here: http://blogs.scientificamerican.com/context-and-variation/2011/10/11/are-you-maternal-enough/Martha Joyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02461330577913907626noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5689865906513225949.post-79669838939616458812011-10-11T00:46:52.891-04:002011-10-11T00:46:52.891-04:00"Cosmetics are seen as freely chosen..."..."Cosmetics are seen as freely chosen..."

I'm still trying to wrap my head around this. I can...I find this study to be really interesting. I can't help but wonder if the class status of the study respondents would make a big difference... the very idea of "natural makeup" is often embraced by elites, while a lot of working class women (and men) feel like "what's the point of spending time on makeup and hair if others can't tell you're wearing it!". Food for thought...

Regardless, let's all keep in mind that makeup is culturally and contextually significant. While Etcoff usually argues that makeup enhances our fertility signals (or disguises signs that we are not so fertile!), let's not forget who wore ridiculous amounts of makeup (not to mention high heels and wigs!) in 18th century England... dudes!Kjerstin Gruyshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15680948783296872113noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5689865906513225949.post-33809851992860125692011-10-10T12:40:10.526-04:002011-10-10T12:40:10.526-04:00"An actual woman would provide us with more i..."An actual woman would provide us with more information about herself: Is she funny?
