There's a freedom in having a "costume," and indeed I feel my best when there's a definite look I'm going for and I think I've achieved it. But my normal, everyday look is...everyday. I don't have anything really conspicuous about me, you know? I wonder if having something like a shaved head would make it easier for me to slip into that persona-minded way of thinking.Autumn Whitefield-Madranohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03379314479257695986noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5689865906513225949.post-66267727113454605342012-06-15T13:02:23.854-04:002012-06-15T13:02:23.854-04:00Penny, that's an excellent point about how the...Penny, that's an excellent point about how the sex workers who are most visible on the Internet are also the ones with the privilege and voice to be heard. It's something I know folks at Tits and Sass are concerned about (I asked one of their editors for help on something and she was happy to help but also encouraged me to find sex workers who weren't online). I think it's fantastic that sex workers can finally represent themselves in the media--but as you point out, that means some stories aren't ever really told.

And agreed about the Joan/Lane moment--it seems significant that Lane killed himself so shortly after the Joan/prostitution moment, doesn't it? I don't think that's an accident, especially given the neat handling of the inappropriate kiss that happened earlier in the season.Autumn Whitefield-Madranohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03379314479257695986noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5689865906513225949.post-50499123022779871022012-06-08T05:48:55.876-04:002012-06-08T05:48:55.876-04:00Hahahahahaha reading your post on your love of sli...Hahahahahaha reading your post on your love of slips made me crack up in the first paragraph. You do more beauty work on your no-human days than I do almost every day. On a no-human day I will occasionally put on deodorant and occasionally brush my teeth, but no guarantees. If it's a human day I'll brush my teeth and put on deodorant if I remember. I do shower a couple of times a week, but that's as far as I go. I am a lazy and dirty child (yet I've never, ever had anyone complain about me being smelly - win!).

That small revelation aside, I loved what you said about seizing imagery for our own pleasure. I enjoy dressing up the most when I have a clear costume in mind - a persona that I am going to be assuming when I wear the clothes and makeup I'm putting on. I do it for myself only (though if I could find a guy who would appreciate and try to guess those personas I'd never let him go) and it makes me feel great. Unfortunately, that gets lost sometimes in dressing up in order to fit the imagery that people around from me. Part of the reason I shave my head is to make it harder to dress to that image - it's really hard to look like a normal young woman with peach fuzz for hair.contrary kiwihttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16428115203292488140noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5689865906513225949.post-13720334701480728332012-06-08T05:15:13.789-04:002012-06-08T05:15:13.789-04:00Experience and perspectives, I should say. While ...Experience and perspectives, I should say. While it is true and interesting to note that Joan is now in a position to be owned by no one (and equally true and interesting to note that so is Peggy, through an entirely different path), it's worth noting that many women who sell themselves do not do so in such winning and beneficial circumstances.

Also, I'm reminded of what was to me the most striking moment in last week's episode- not Lane's suicide, but the moment when he was in Joan's office, drinking, just after his confrontation with Don. Joan talked about wanting to get away, and Lane made it sexual- he wanted to imagine her bouncing along in a bikini in Hawaii or some such. Joan was in that moment trying to be an equal, assuming that now, as partner, she was in a position to be considered equal. Lane's reduction of her to a sexual punchline (and her furious reaction to it) said volumes about just what Joan's bargain has gotten her.Carmenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12747300344198624283noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5689865906513225949.post-47848271646260824432012-06-08T05:07:51.457-04:002012-06-08T05:07:51.457-04:00Re: listening to those who sell their bodies- that...Re: listening to those who sell their bodies- that's true, but what often seems to get lost is the importance of listening to those who sell their bodies and aren't privileged enough to talk about *their* experiences on the internet.Carmenhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12747300344198624283noreply@blogger.com
