There's a great bit in there about the glamour of wirelessness, and how no ads of domestic life ever show cords or wires (unless, of course, it's presenting a solution for them, like cord caddies or...wirelessness). A MoMA design exhibit with a then-futuristic vision was actually quietly vandalized in this regard: When the curator took a closer look at an exhibit of a modern living room, she found that someone had actually removed all wires from the appliances, making them inoperable and truly *only* a function of design. It's a pretty widespread displacement of our desires, which actually is parallel to glamour, which articulates inarticulable desires.

It's interesting when we see happiness/inner piece, whatever you want to call it, treated in a glamorous fashion; I'm thinking here specifically of Lululemon and its connection to the whole "yoga is what you need to make everything PERFECT" thing, thus rendering something as prosaic as well-fitting yoga pants glamorous.Autumn Whitefield-Madranohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03379314479257695986noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5689865906513225949.post-67342860612616592502013-11-08T17:00:10.204-05:002013-11-08T17:00:10.204-05:00Certainly glamour takes on about a zillion forms, ...Certainly glamour takes on about a zillion forms, like picking up the flute because of Sailor Moon! I think we're all susceptible to forms of glamour, using the definition in the book, though it is interesting that so many of the tropes of glamour do indeed have to do with appearance, for both men and women (evening gowns, tuxedos, cigarette holders, etc.). In the book, Virginia Postrel specifically calls this out as part of the appeal of glamour—things that one can wear or hold make it easier for people to imagine projecting themselves into the vision that a glamorous object projects.

But in any case, certainly not everyone responds to idealized images of women as images of glamour per se, and it sounds like you're one who doesn't. It's a perfect example of how even the things that we assume are universally glamorous, aren't necessarily—that to a degree it's always going to be about how the object/item/person/setting is perceived by any given person.

PS: Now that I've Skyped with you you can't get away with saying how unattractive you are because I know otherwise for fact, but that's another matter!Autumn Whitefield-Madranohttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03379314479257695986noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5689865906513225949.post-87612301443242582842013-11-07T18:22:56.565-05:002013-11-07T18:22:56.565-05:00thanks for a good idea, i used it in an unrelated ...thanks for a good idea, i used it in an unrelated context, but your concept of glamour is pretty strong stuff. http://wp.me/pTyxR-EsJoe Grobelnyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10204730687851768118noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5689865906513225949.post-85801465888909039662013-11-07T15:42:31.885-05:002013-11-07T15:42:31.885-05:00Great post, Autumn. Your description of glamour as...Great post, Autumn. Your description of glamour as something full of the promise of escape and a better life makes me think about the pursuit of beauty and thinness, and how so many women (and increasingly, men) feel as though being beautiful and thin will help them find happiness and success. I feel like I see that connection directly and indirectly stated about a thousand times a day, at every level of communication.

The problem is that the fantasy is just that - a fantasy. It obscures the fact that the desired state of being usually brings with it its own set of problems. Like, if beauty and glamour really are such a sure bet, then why are so many models and actresses unhappy? Why is our culture littered with the wreckage of young, beautiful women? The power that comes from these things is often not real power at all, but illusory, which is exactly how you described glamour in the beginning of the piece. In a way it seems like almost a self-defeating mission.

My thinking is that the answer to achieving something resembling happiness (or maybe contentment or inner peace, as I'm not really sure happiness is the right word for this) is a bit more prosaic and boring, I suppose, but it's also not the kind of thing that sells magazines or movies or much of anything, really. I can understand wanting to have a bit of escapism through these things, as with your cousin, and how that escapism can be a liberating thing, but it can only do so much. Like, thinking about the vogue balls - I watched "Paris is Burning" and I loved it, but then I looked up all of the main characters and realized that all but one of them had died really awful deaths. (Like poor Venus...)

I could probably write a lot more on this, which is a testament to how thought-provoking this post is. Thanks for sharing it with us.Caitlinhttp://fitandfeminist.wordpress.comnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5689865906513225949.post-45209812898845581182013-11-07T13:04:46.757-05:002013-11-07T13:04:46.757-05:00It's interesting, but out of this entire artic...It's interesting, but out of this entire article, the only thing that really resonated with me is the story about your brother and Star Trek. It's just an interesting reminder that my relationship to my body isn't like most people's.

When other [women/girls] feel ugly, they try to do everything they can to escape it, hide it or change it. But I didn't do that. I've never done that. I've always accepted it - even as a kid - and I guess that didn't leave me susceptible to the same trappings of the mainstream beauty industry. I also don't idolize real people, and I don't believe in role models or modeling your behavior after real people, so the aspects about Glamour of wanting to be like the ideal is foreign to me. Even now, I don't like idealized versions of humans (except the occasional sexy male celebrity, and even then it wavers).

But I've done a few things because of a fictional ideal. When I was in middle school, I picked up the flute because in Sailor Moon, Alan (in the first season) plays this one particular song. By owning a flute, I was able to practice and mimic that. I still have my flute - though I'm very rusty! But watching Sailor Moon prompted me to learn how to play the flute. I've thought about fictional characters, like Howard Roark (from The Fountainhead) and tried to think of how they would perceive a situation, what can I do to be more like HIM.

Anyway - admitting that I'm ugly and lack the potential or possibility to be or be perceived as beautiful/attractive means that I get to opt out of a lot of both nuanced and blatant beauty agendas. Glamour only works for people who have an internal desire for that thing. And while I think being attractive would've made certain things about my life much easier and more accessible (like dating), deep down I know that I'm not attractive.

Which provides an interesting bedrock for discussing being affected by beauty because I'm also not interested in changing that perspective either (like most people would be driven to do).

Great post! So informative! Tatianahttp://drivenbytatiana.comnoreply@blogger.com
